It's All in the Name

This month's focus on Om Namo Narayanaya invites us into one of the most ancient and accessible spiritual practices: mantra. Across traditions, practitioners have long understood that sacred sound has the power to transform the mind, open the heart, and reconnect us with the divine presence that lives within all beings. The sages taught that mantra is far more than a collection of syllables to be recited mechanically. It is a living vibration, a bridge between the individual soul and the infinite.

The Sanskrit word mantra comes from two roots: man, meaning "mind," and tra, meaning "to protect" or "to liberate." A mantra, then, is that which protects and liberates the mind from its endless cycles of worry, distraction, and fear. In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, mantra gently turns us inward, reminding us of what is eternal and true.

For me, some of the most profound spiritual experiences of my life have unfolded through chanting mantra. There is something extraordinary that happens when people gather to chant together: the boundaries between self and other begin to soften, time seems to dissolve, and the heart remembers something it has always known.

In those moments, the music becomes prayer. The melodies and rhythms carry us beyond the limitations of ordinary language into a space of joy, longing, gratitude, and surrender. We do not chant because we have already arrived at enlightenment; we chant because chanting itself is the path home.

My guru, Maharaji—Neem Karoli Baba—embodied this truth completely. He continually chanted the name of Ram and encouraged devotees to do the same and to recite the Hanuman Chalisa. Maharaji understood that the divine Name carries within it the presence of the divine itself. To repeat the Name with sincerity is to invite grace into our lives. We may not always feel its effects immediately, but like water slowly shaping stone, the practice transforms us over time.

The great saints and sages remind us that mantra is not reserved for special occasions or for people who consider themselves particularly spiritual. It is available to all of us, in every moment. We can chant while driving, walking, cooking dinner, or sitting quietly in meditation. We can whisper the Names of the divine in moments of joy and in moments of grief. We can return to them when we feel lost, overwhelmed, or disconnected.

For those who walk the path of Bhakti Yoga, mantra is one of the most important spiritual practices. Bhakti, the yoga of devotion, teaches us that the heart awakens through love, remembrance, and the repetition of the divine Names. Chanting mantra and participating in kirtan are not performances; they are practices of connection that help us cultivate humility, gratitude, joy, and a deeper relationship with the sacred.

At Satsang Yoga Studio, we are blessed to offer many opportunities to explore these practices, from kirtan gatherings and community chanting to classes that incorporate mantra, meditation, and yogic philosophy. Whether you have been chanting for years or have never uttered a Sanskrit word in your life, you are welcome. No experience is necessary—only a willingness to open your heart and discover what these ancient practices might reveal.

Om Namo Narayanaya is often translated as "I bow to the divine presence within all beings." To chant these words is to practice seeing the sacred everywhere: in strangers and loved ones, in moments of celebration and challenge, and within our own imperfect hearts. Each repetition becomes an act of remembrance.

In the end, mantra asks very little of us. We do not need to be accomplished meditators or gifted singers. We need only the willingness to begin again, one breath and one repetition at a time. The saints assure us that every mantra uttered with sincerity leaves an imprint on the heart.

The power is in the Names. May we remember to chant them often.
